Iranian police seize over 557 tons of drugs in a year

TEHRAN, April 16 (MNA) -- The Iranian police seized over 557 tons of illicit drugs over the course of the last Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, 2010.

Of this amount, 461.396 tons of opium was confiscated and 45.225 tons of hashish, 22.176 tons of heroin, 14.455 tons of morphine, and 14.375 tons of other types of illicit drugs, he added.
In addition, Hosseinabadi stated that 951 kilos of crystal meth (methamphetamine) and over 14 million ecstasy tablets were also seized by the police.
 
Last year, 1717 operations were launched against drug traffickers that resulted in the death of 214 drug traffickers, but unfortunately, 34 police officers were also killed and 46 were injured, he stated.
 
Between March 21, 2009 and March 20, 2010, the police intercepted 957 vehicles of drug traffickers and seized 37.219 tons of illegal drugs at a number of checkpoints using sniffer dogs, he said.
 
“The anti-drug police succeeded in confiscating 557 tons and 622 kilos of various kinds of illicit drugs in the country last year,” National Drug Control Headquarters Director Brigadier General Hamidreza Hosseinabadi told the Mehr News Agency here on Friday.
